It’s a family decision.

The family sitting in the shade.

One of our founders, Les Miller, facilitated this land transition from the Brue Family Trust to BAM. Les fell ill, and Clinton had to go cast a vision for the family. These photo document that beautiful summer meeting. The extended family came and sat under the trees as Clint answered their questions and addressed their concerns.

Meeting the Family

The Brue siblings walking Karol’s Prairie.

Today we walked the property with the family. They shared stories of what they remembered from their childhood. Most remember some structures on the property or stories of structures. Most remembered water running through the property. Current the land is dry except some water in the dugout. This only visible remains of structures on the spots where the weeds are different from the rubble of the foundation just under the soil. We are excited to see where this goes.

The soil appears to be in ill health. The property is covered in smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermis). There is also quite a bit of thistle, bull thistle (Cirsium) is pictured..

Karol’s Prairie Possibility

Notes from visiting Karol’s Prairie in Turner County SD for the first time on December 7, 2020.

Rachel Saum and Clinton Brown just got back from Karol’s Prairie and are leaving a note here of a bunch of questions we have. We don’t expect you to answer any or all of them but wanted to have a common understanding of our thoughts.

What does the recovery process look like for prairie restoration?

What are we restoring it to?

What is the history of the Prairie? How much was it grazed and for how many years?

All the questions about water!

How many future phases of restoration does it need to go through in order to be fully healthy and what are those?

All the soil questions?

What are the agricultural pathways and opportunities for the property?

What is the relationship with the current neighboring properties and how willing would they be to collaborate or communicate?
